New England [4:32] Total Running Time: [1:57:01] * lyrics Woody Guthrie ** The Smith Taper: payasos Location: recorded 12 meters from stage, slightly to the right Source / Lineage: Church Audio CA 14 Cardioids > Sony RH1 (PCM-mode) > Hi-MD > Sonic Stage > wav > Audacity (level adjustments, trackmarking, some leveller for close clapping) > TLH > flac level 8 Notes: Billy Bragg solo, second show of the ongoing tour, the venue much better suited than the last time in Hamburg, the Fabrik beeing an old (guess what) converted into one of the first autonomous cultureral centres. The venue not sold out but full, an appreciative (classic Bragg middle aged) audience, very appreciative indeed, singing along already on the second song but hardly any chatter, neither during the songs nor during the long parts of Billy bantering, engaged and funny as usual. But a lot of laughter and cheering - justified, a very entertaining show it was. The right mixture of new and old songs, Billy's voice as powerful (augmented by some new herbal tea) as the electric guitar, and as usual a long show as well, long enought that I had to change the md during the main set - so after 91 minutes I missed part of a lenghty rant on Labour politics, Bankers dividents (specifically about 1 minute about Barkleys Bank, tr. 31 after 44 sec.), but it's hardly noticible as the remaining banter is still coherent. Recording levels were right, about half a docend spikes over the limit, smoothes these, lowered a fwe more volume spikes using the audacity envelope tool, limited close clapping manually, raised the overall levels by 1,2 dB - the result sounds fine.
