The Sting's latest stunt with a symphony orchestra surprised even some of loyal fans, to say the least and might have dismayed many. I for one could not have helped being skeptical of this musical melding of pop and symphony. But when I walked into the ground floor of the venue and saw the 40-something member orchestra fine-tuning their instruments for the show, all of sudden I got psyched up for the prospect that the strings and the brass usually substituted with crappy sound of keyboard or synthesizer in today's concert setting would be actually performed by real pros for tonight show!! It was simply an awe-inspiring view. From the opening "If I Ever Lose My Faith In You," through a generous mix of Police and his solo hits, the evening brought out the best in a singer and gave an engaging opportunity to showcase his unexplored potential of collaborating rock with classical. Given the extensive super hit catalogue, of course, some songs were expected; If I Ever Lose My Faith in You, Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic, Englishman in New York, Roxanne, Straight To My Heart, When We Dance, Shape of My Heart, Fields of Gold, Next to You, King of Pain, Every Breath You Take, Desert Rose, Fragile A song like "Englishman in New York" lends itself well into an orchestral makeover. The delicate "Shape of My Heart" and the subtle "Field of Gold" adapted quite naturally to the classical treatment. Even a punk-tinged "Next To You" went so well while the string section tried furiously to keep up with the rapid tempo. "King of Pain" also fared well, the strings duplicating the drum and bass solo in the song bridge. The crowd pleaser like "Every Breath You Take" and "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" worked amazing well..well, it is true that these two songs can be done in whatever musical formats to make the audience smile. Sting diligently performed these people's favorites to please the crowd but the real treat came when more obscure tracks were performed. "Russians" in particular benefited largely from the orchestra set-up shined among others. "Whenever I Say Your Name" featured a brilliant work of the first violinist delighted not only the audience but also Sting. Charming and graceful throughout the night, Sting held the stage front and center looking fit and all smiles. Voice and sound were in super-fine form, probably the best ever heard. One last thing I should touch upon is that I had never paid attention to his love songs and his approach to these tracks before but the full orchestra interpretation really intensified subtle nuance and humor in his songs for me to appreciate. Instead of "I love you and you love me" approach, he seemed to have preferred "I love you but you love someone else" path for more complex and delicate song-writing plot. A full orchestra, under the directions of Stephen Mercurio, truly breathed new life into his impressive song catalogue. If you have any chance to see his show from this tour, I strongly recommend to go check upon it. I am sure it will be an evening you won't forget very soon. Tapers & Sound Editors Notes: We recorded the entire show from the center block. No much crowd interference. The hanging PA Mix sounded great throughout the night with a solid blend of vocals and instruments (the low end sounds a little bit thin for my music taste though). Considering the size of the venue and the acoustic, it is remarkably that there is no booming or distortion. Recorded from the center block with a Schoeps MK4s>Nbox>Sony M-10 in almost perfect set-up (mics directly aimed at both stocks), you can't expect better sound from this show than this one. Nuemann could shine more when recording from further back in larger venue. AKG could possible do the same when recording sizzling rock tunes. But in this particular place for this kind of music, you can t beat this set-up. Apart from removing or reducing the crowd noise, no much should be done let alone altering the original sound files in any way. Be sure to play it on your best playback system or listen to it at least with your best headphones. Hope that you will like this one. Dimeadozen.org: Torrent 343260 (by mickeyjaggar)
