I'm not really a fan of U2. Even though I'm of mostly Irish descent I never really took to their signature sound. To be completely frank, I thought Bono a pompous ass. But, they did make quite a splash in the 80s and miraculously enough are still doing so today. Don't get me wrong, I don't "hate" U2. Anyway, I had the opportunity to have the use of a video camera to pair with my new portable hifi vhs recorder. In 1985 a video camera and recorder were quite bulky, no, really, this was some bulky shit. Luckily I had a close college friend that worked security for Bill Graham Presents and he got all this crap in for me. So with the help of another friend holding the mics, I hand-held the camera though the show and got a shaky marginally watchable video from a medium good seat about half way back and midway up the left side. Don't even bother asking for the video, I'm not at all ready to prepare a DVD upload for a variety of reasons and it's not very good anyway. This is the hifi audio, a very good recording setup, compromised mainly by the automatic level control, the screaming girls nearby, and the so so seats. The greatest flaw is the crowd noise and that, I think, is a common problem with U2 audience tapes. There are a few clicks from the mini plug connection to recorder, a problem that's hard to avoid with mini plugs. So, if you are a fan, I hope you enjoy this. By the way, doing this was such a pain in the ass that I decided to stick with making audio tapes, it would be a few years before the gear would shrink down to a practical size. I also felt that very few people actually have any desire to sit through a two hour audience video anyway and even if they do it once, they won't be doing it again any time soon, so it just wasn't worth it to me to continue trying and missing out on making good audio tapes.
