"40" [6:23] Source: STORIES OF BOYS - Amazing Stork Records 7487 A-D Most likely recorded at Wembley Stadium, London, UK on 12 June 1987 and at The Sports Arena, Los Angeles, California, USA on 20 April 1987. Lineage: Original vinyl LPs ---> audio-technica AT-LP60-USB Turntable ---> Audacity ----> .wav files ---> Trader's Little Helper (Level 8) ---> FLAC files ---> U2 Torrents --->You Notes: This recording is a curious one to me. I purchased these vinyl LPs at my local record shop some years ago with the hope of digitizing them someday. (This despite the fact that I did not own a turntable at the time!) Unfortunately, I didn't get around to purchasing a USB turntable until very recently. Once I did that, I listened to this recording for the first time. This generated more questions that it answered. When I purchased the set, I naturally assumed that this was a complete recording from a single show on The Joshua Tree tour. Part of my reason for this assumption was that the spine of the LP sleeve identifies the show as coming from "Wembly 87". And yes, Wembley is misspelled on the spine. (The spine also identifies the title as STORIES OF THE BOYS) whereas the front labels it as simply STORIES OF BOYS.) I had also hoped that this recording was a soundboard recording. But upon listening to the albums, it became apparent that at least two different shows were sourced, and both were audience recordings. My best guess (and I've listed several clues below that will hopefully help to positively identify the sources) is that Sides 1 & 2 are taken from the show at Wembley Stadium on 12 June 1987, and Sides 3 & 4 are taken from the show at The Sports Arena in Los Angeles on 20 April 1987. If I am correct, then that makes this an incomplete concert and therefore probably only of interest to collectors and fans of vinyl bootlegs. I hope someone out there gets some enjoyment out of it. Notes about the quality: I would rate the sound quality of this recording on two different levels, one for each LP. Sides 1 & 2 are a 7/10 and Sides 3 & 4 are a 5/10. Of course these levels are subjective, and remember that these are audience recordings on vinyl. I did not do any tampering to the quality of this recording with the exception of raising the volume slightly through Goldwave. There are a few small skips (noted below) and of course the usual clicks and pops customary to vinyl. Lastly, as the sleeve and actual LPs are to big to fit onto my scanner, I had to use a digital camera for the "artwork" photos. Any help positively identifying these recordings would be greatly appreciated. Enjoy! Some notes on how to (hopefully) identify these recordings: At the end of Where The Streets Have No Name and the beginning of I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, there is a noticeable echo on Bono's mic. This has been mentioned in another boot from the Wembley show. Bono mentions being at Wembley Stadium during the intro to I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For. Bono mentions Margret Thatcher at the very end of Bullet The Blue Sky: "... and they run... into the arms... of Margret Thatcher." Bono mentions that "these gentlemen would like some water" at the end of Trip Through Your Wires. Bono mentions Amnesty International during the second version of Sunday, Bloody Sunday (Side 3 / C1). Bono brings Bob Dylan on about halfway through I Shall Be Released. Dylan stays on for the next song, Knockin' On Heaven's Door. "40" is complete on this recording, which it apparently was NOT on the Wembley Stadium audience recording. This serves to reinforce the idea that Sides 3 & 4 are from the Los Angeles show.
