With Or Without You [5:36] 12. Moment Of Surrender [7:36] Posted by: *** Notes: Hi everyone. I am still doing some “quality control” on my Rose Bowl rips (in other words, I am listening to everything from start to finish today to make sure there’s nothing wrong before uploading these somewhere for everyone.) I will have more on this later (unless I find problems). Does anyone have a web server where I could stick a 200mb file later today? If so, please let me know. Regardless, I will let everyone know where to grab this stuff later this evening. Before anyone asks, I DO NOT have preferred software to rip audio from DVDs. There are plenty of programs out there that can rip files directly from DVD to mp3, but some do not offer the same flexibility as the older, single-purpose software programs that I use. I am also very picky when it comes to selecting the best audio sources from DVDs, so that is another reason that I have been using the same exact programs to do this for the past 8-10 years or so. What I am saying is, there are MUCH easier ways to do what I do, but I am just too lazy to learn new things, nor do I really care to. :) SO… If you like overly boring details on audio streams and making mp3s from concert DVDs, read on. Otherwise, you jump cut right to the bottom. Cheers. *** Here's the deal with 'Breathe' from the Rose Bowl DVD: Audio-wise, the song is fine (more on that below), but visually, it's a complete mess. I have no idea what happened between the Rose Bowl Webcast and post-production, but the result is flat-out terrible. It's almost as if they went out of their way to make this bonus track look as bad as possible. It is MUCH worse-looking than the webcast version, but it sounds fine. There are now lots of quick edits, close-ups and too many out-of focus shots to count. The colors are pretty drab too. Again, audio-wise the song is ok, but there are a few minor quirks with the audio that I will point out below. As a matter of fact, the editors have even fixed Bono's "cockatoo" lyric flub in the beginning of the song and it is basically flawless now (You would never know from listening to it now that he messed up that lyric now!) This all leads me to believe that this lyrical flub is definitely NOT the reason that this song was left off the main DVD. It's either a problem with the HD video source files or some sort of creative decision that I can't quite put my finger on. Again, audio is OK, but video is a disaster. SO... Working with brand new audio rips from both of the Deluxe Bose Bowl DVDs, I set out to "re-incorporate" 'Breathe' into the setlist (audio only!) for the sake of hearing the Rose Bowl concert as it actually occurred. Here's the details: DVD1: Luckily, there are 3 separate audio sources to pick from on DVD1: Dolby Digital 5.1 (6 channel), DTS 5.1 (6 channel), and PCM Stereo (2 channel). Since PCM is uncompressed (and already in 2-channel stereo that will be needed for the final files), I always choose this as my source (when available) when I rip my own audio from concert DVDs. To my ears, it yields the best possible results when making mp3s from concert DVDs. (To be sure, I always rip all versions and decide what I like best. PCM always comes out the winner.) PCM is what I used to rip my files from this DVD. I rip directly from the VOB files on the DVD to individual wav files, and then encode the mp3’s later. DVD2: As is the case with most bonus DVDs for concerts, there is only one choice for audio. In this case, the audio is Dolby Digital (2 channel). In the end, this will work OK, so this is what I ripped the contents of DVD2 with. (Again, I rip directly from the VOB files on the DVD to individual wav files, and then encode the mp3’s later.) As for the ‘Kingdom (Intro)’ -> ‘Breathe’ -> ‘Get On You Boots’ transitions, here is how it all panned out: The main DVD1 has the following as its first 3 tracks (2-Channel PCM audio): • Track 1: Some sort of weird “spaceship intro” that fades into an abbreviated version of ‘Kingdom’. It’s also ends with subtle sounds of “Get On Your Boots” coming up. It’s not really usable, to be honest. There’s already too many edits in this file to chop it up any more and stick ‘Breathe’ in somehow. • Track 2: Starts off with bono saying “the future needs a big kiss” and then the entire ‘Get On Your Boots’ • Track 3: ‘Magnificent’ The bonus DVD2 has the following usable audio tracks (2 channel Dolby Digital 5.1): • Track 1: The first track on the DVD really made this all possible, to be honest, and I was surprised to find it. It’s the first 5 minutes of the “Squaring the Circle” documentary and starts off with a much longer ‘Kingdom (Intro) than found on DVD1, which fades directly into “Breathe” (but from a different concert) before finally a bunch of interviews, etc.) (I was really lucky to find this track on this set!) • Track ? (last track on the DVD): This is “Breathe” from the Rose Bowl show (with lyrics already fixed), but the ‘Kingdom (Intro)’ is extremely abbreviated, and almost non-existent. (UGH!). So this is what I had to work with, and here is what I did: I dumped the extracted wav files into Sony Sound Forge and created one long wav file consisting of the following (in order): • ‘Kingdom (Intro) (From DVD2, Track 1, omitting the beginning of ‘Breathe’ from some other show, and leaving just the ‘Kingdom (Intro)’ part) • ‘Breathe’ (From DVD2), omitting the abbreviated and unusable snippet of ‘Kingdom (Intro)’ at the beginning. • ‘Get On Your Boots’ (From DVD1), with the snippets of ‘Kingdom (Intro) that were present on this track now omitted. Once I had the one long wav file flowing nicely between the three tracks (above), I created three separate wav files for the above tracks. Finally I encoded all of the resulting wav files as CBR, 192kbps stereo (Note: not joint stereo!) mp3 files. Why am I mentioning all of this? Because once all is said and done, there is a reason that the final “Kingdom (Intro)” and “Breathe” tracks (from DVD2) sound just a tad different than the rest of the tracks ripped from the DVD1, and that reason was out of my control. These two tracks came from different-sourced (2-channel, Dolby Digital) audio files than the rest of the audio files from DVD1 (2-channel PCM Stereo). The quality of the DVD1 files will blow you away, but the first two tracks from DVD2 are not that bad either. The difference is fairly remarkable, but the first two tracks sound as good as possible without jumping through hoops and trying to make them sound any better through different processing (and probably making them worse in the end).
